One of the branches of Regional history and art Museum is located in a picturesque location on the outskirts of Kaliningrad, and is a fortification of brick and concrete, built in the nineteenth century.

Fort No. 5, named after the king of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm III (head of state during the war with Napoleon), were part of the military installations of königsberg and was one of the ring FORTS "Night feather of Koenigsberg".

The building has the shape of a hexagon, surrounded by a moat, a massive stone wall and earthen rampart. The moat equipped with trenches, firing positions for flame throwers, machine guns, mortars and artillery shells. With the adjacent territory, the Fort was connected by a bridge. For the purpose of masking the building was planted with trees and shrubs. In 1886 military structure was additionally covered by a two-meter reinforced concrete, was built rotating observation dome. Before the storming of Koenigsberg, the Fort was further strengthened: on the flanks dug anti-tank ditches, obstacles installed, all of the adjacent space was mined and wrapped in barbed wire. During the prolonged assault of the Fort was used by Soviet troops artillery piece special power that led to the victory and considerable destruction of structures. At the siege and capture of Fort No. 5 in April 1945 fifteen Soviet officers and soldiers were awarded the title of hero of the Soviet Union.

In 1979 the ruins of the Fort No. 5 gave the Kaliningrad regional history and art Museum. In 2001, the Fort was opened the Museum of fortification and military engineering. Nowadays on the territory of the historic structures are located: the war memorial in honor of those killed in the assault of Soviet soldiers and exposition of military equipment, where the Soviet guns, Katyusha, torpedoes, depth charges and a deck gun.
