In the centre of Kaliningrad, just opposite the main building of the Kaliningrad University, is a sculptural composition "bison Wrestling" founded in 1911, the famous German animal painter of his time - the sculptor August Gaul. The composition consists of locking in a duel of two powerful bison, cast in bronze and mounted on a meter pedestal.
On the basis of numerous sketches and long observation of animals member of the Berlin secession sculptor August Gaul sculpt figures locking horns bison. Once cast in bronze creates an ensemble of sculptures, pedestal and basin with a fountain. The fountain consists of two holes in the pedestal, stylized under the sink, where water flows in a rectangular pool. Original sculptural composition was intended for the castle of the Archbishop of Munster, but in 1912 was transferred to königsberg for the arrangement of Hohen-alley (now square on the Avenue of Peace) at the new building of the Supreme court of East Prussia, close to Steindammm gates. The opening of the sculptural ensemble "bison Wrestling took place on 12 November 1912.
The next sculpture to the court house and the residents of the city called the Association of the struggle of two human rights defenders and the monument was often called "the Prosecutor and the defender. In the postwar period sculpture was moved to the Park area opposite the administration, in the late 1950-ies was decorated with the Kaliningrad zoo, and by the early 1970s was returned to its place. In Soviet times, the mighty Prussian bison bulls were renamed, and in the courthouse located in the Kaliningrad University student cafe "bulls".
In our days the sculptural composition "Fighting bison" is a monument of art (regional significance) and historic attraction in Kaliningrad. The area surrounding the monument, the Park regularly hosts small rock concerts and student activities.
