Monument To G. R. Derzhavin Photo: The Monument To G. R. Derzhavin

The monument to Gabriel Romanovich Derzhavin was inaugurated in the centre of Kazan on 3 December 2003. The original monument was destroyed in the thirties. The 260 th anniversary of Gavriil Derzhavin, it was decided to restore the monument. The customer of the monument was the city administration. Won the competition a project of the Kazan sculptor Mahmoud Gasimov. The project provided the most accurate copy of the monument erected in 1847, in the courtyard of the University of Kazan, before the building of the anatomical theatre. In the work on a sculpture project author has used old photographs, engravings and drawings of the monument and its parts. M. Gasimov even repeated the mistake in the date of installation of the monument. On the monument was listed 1846, although in fact he had only been established in 1847.

In addition to the monument, the project was attended by hardscape around the monument: fixtures and a semi-circle for the monument. The architectural component of the project completed Rosalia Technology – head of Department of design of the city and Chairman of
Of the Union of architects of Tatarstan. Made monument in Kazan, on the experimental-industrial plant of the Volga-Kama research Institute WALT.

Interesting is the fact that the bronze intended for the monument, was kidnapped. The monument was completed only after the metal has been found. In 2003, the monument took its place in Lyadsky kindergarten on the street.

Interesting story of the monument to Derzhavin. The author of the monument erected in 1847 was academician K. A. Ton. The statue and the bas-reliefs were made by the sculptor S. I. Gulbarga. At different times he stood in different places in the city. Because of its great weight transfer always involves considerable difficulties.

Originally installed in the courtyard of the University city architect H. Crump and architect M. P. Corinth, the monument in February of 1868 was moved to Theatre square (now Freedom Square). The monument was moved to a more meaningful place was approved by Emperor Alexander II. In 1871, around the monument to Derzhavin broke the square, which became known as Derzhavin gardens. In 1930, the monument was destroyed, and the place of the monument in 1936 he founded the new theatre. Now this place is Tatar academic theatre of Opera and ballet. M. Jalil.
