Folk art Museum – one of the main attractions of the Greek city of Komotini (the capital of the administrative region of East Macedonia and Thrace). It was founded in 1962 and is administered by the Cultural Association of Komotini.
Since 1989 the Museum of folk art is housed in a beautiful two-story mansion, which formerly belonged to the family of Pages. For this purpose the building was restored and today is a magnificent example of traditional regional architecture. Besides the two main floors of exhibition space equipped also on the ground floor and the patio.
Excellent collection of the Museum of folk art shows the development of the history and culture of Thrace, as well as the life and traditions of local residents. The exhibits presented in the Museum were collected not only on the territory of modern Greek Thrace (in history known as Western Thrace), but in Eastern and Northern Thrace (now Turkey and Bulgaria, respectively), and imported from Asia minor lands.
In the exhibition one can see the traditional clothes, handmade lace, embroidery, jewelry, musical instruments, brassware, wood, clay and silver. The Museum also has household utensils, furniture, tools and a variety of devices (including agricultural tools and vintage loom), and more.
Special place in the Museum of folk art is personal belongings of the native Komotini - Archbishop Chrysanthus of Athens. However, of no less interest and a unique icon with the image of Jesus Christ, the virgin Mary, Saint Anne and the prophets, dates from the 18th century, silver cancer (early 19th century) and other Church relics.
