In the Western part of the island of Rhodes, approximately 27 km from the capital and 5 km on Southeast from the village of Theologos is the famous Valley of the butterflies (Petaludes). This area is declared a protected area and is one of the most famous attractions of the island.

The picturesque valley is literally immersed in greenery. Lush vegetation, numerous streams, small lakes and beautiful waterfalls create the reserve is a unique microclimate, ideal for the reproduction of butterflies. Even in the hottest time of year in the valley is clean and cool the air.

In summer the valley millions of butterflies, covering all around great living carpet. Here you can see the magnificent butterflies of the family of bears. This is a rare species living in the habitats of the sweet gum trees, the resin of which has a characteristic strong smell. In the valley of the butterflies spend the final stage of its life cycle. Visitors are strictly forbidden in any way to disturb the butterflies.

Beautiful butterfly Valley is one of the most unique protected areas, not only in Greece but also in Europe and also one of the most popular places on the island of Rhodes. Every year from may to September, it attracts a huge number of tourists, which, however, is not a very good influence on the population of butterflies.

After long walks through the picturesque valley and contemplation million fine tiny creatures, you can relax and dine in a small, cozy tavern, which is located near the entrance to the reserve. There is also a small but very interesting Museum of the history of nature, in which you can learn a lot about butterfly Valley and its unique ecosystem, as well as a gift shop.
