In the second half of the nineteenth century saw the construction of new buildings and the landscaping around the castle of Kuressaare. It all started from the date of acquisition by the town of Kuressaare resort status, thanks to the discovery of deposits and the active use of medicinal clays. In those years here on the treatment and rest, came a large number of people. Therefore, it became necessary to bring the area around the castle in order.

In 1861, established a green Committee, whose responsibilities included the creation and management of the Park. This year is the time of the founding of Kuressaare town Park.

Since the Foundation of great help was provided by urban residents by providing funds, seedlings, in addition, for construction work, they offered horses and wagons.

The Park was laid out on the site of the old Church and the vacant land around the fortress. In order to honor the memory of those who were buried in this Church, and its walls, was erected the monument. On one side of the monument described the history of the Park, the other engraved lines of Schiller "Wirke Gutes, du nahrest der Menschheit gottliche Pflanze".

In 1930, in Kuressaare town Park from the University of Tartu were brought rare species of plants. So now we can see a beautiful Park where you can meet about 80 species of trees and shrubs.
