Leipzig's old town hall is a majestic building, which is one of the most famous attractions of the city and its decoration. Originally there was a castle of Pleissenburg, which was built in the XIII century. It was demolished in 1890, and in 1897 the city of Leipzig has announced a competition to design the new city hall. The main requirement for the architects was that the new building resembled a demolished castle. This competition was won Hugo Licht, Director of the construction Department in the city of Leipzig.

By 1905, the building of a New town Hall, which occupied about 10 thousand square meters, was fully erected, and opened in the presence of the king of Saxony, Friedrich August III.
