The Auerbach cellar is one of the most popular and famous old restaurant in Leipzig. It is located inside Madler-passage. In the beginning of its existence in 1438 it was a place where trade wine. The name chosen by chance, it is connected with the Saxon elector and a Professor of medicine Henry Stamera, who was known in town as Dr. Auerbach. He was a native of the small town of Auerbach, located in Upper Palatinate.

For his distinguished service and devotion to the doctor got permission from the king to the wine trade. From the earliest days of the existence of the cellar of Auerbach became very popular among the population of Leipzig, among the regulars of this establishment was the reformer Martin Luther, poet and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was impressed by the story of the magician Faust raced from a barrel top the stairs.
