Laguna del mort is located in the northeast of the Venetian lagoon, the resort of Lido di Jesolo. Until 5 October 1935-the year that is now called the Laguna del mort, was the last section of the Piave river to its confluence with the Adriatic sea. And that day, unusually high water level rise, the river broke its banks and changed the direction of the current, rushing to the sea. Her new mouth was located 3 km South of the former, and access to the old channel was blocked by tons of mud and silt. The last stretch of the river Piave thus was deprived of regular access fresh water and filled only during high tides. Thus was born the Laguna del mort.
Today this lagoon, spread over an area of 125 hectares, is a natural habitat for numerous species of marine birds. It consists of sand dunes, and its banks are overgrown Maritime pines that have shaped characteristic of coastal flora and fauna ecosystem.
The main water plant Lagoon del Mortes are sea grass and algae. In the South-East are covered with reed marshes, and former bed of the river Piave is home to evergreen shrub with stiff leaves and small blue or white flowers. Coastal dunes are allocated artificially established forest, consisting of Maritime pine trees, juniper, European Sverige and sandy reeds at the water's edge.
As for wildlife in the Lagoon del mort, here you will see hares, weasels, European green toad, green lizards, Copperhead, snakes, mallards, Teal, svistuha and common Pochards. In addition, nest in the lagoon Savi's Warbler, birds and striped fantail warblers. Sometimes you can see the honey Buzzards and red herons.
In 2011, the year the Laguna del mort was named one of the 11 most beautiful beaches of Italy on the Italian version of the League of nature protection.
