Small resort town of Lindos, located on the South East coast of Rhodes, one of the most picturesque and interesting from the point of view of the architecture of the cities of the island.
One of the most interesting attractions after Lindos Acropolis is the ancient Orthodox Church of the virgin, which is located almost in the center of the city. The temple was built in the XIII century on the foundations of ancient religious buildings. Since its construction the Church of the virgin repeatedly reconstructed, were also added some extensions. The greatest change in the appearance of the temple were made 1489-90-ies. Repair and reconstruction of the temple was carried out by order of the Grand Master of the order of St John Pierre Aubusson.
The Church is a cross-domed Church with an octagonal dome, whitewashed walls and a red tile roof. The most striking difference with the Church is a tall stone tower. The Church is surrounded by high walls, and its courtyard paved with mosaics of black and white pebbles.
The decoration of the Church is an old carved wooden iconostasis, which dates back to the 17th century. Hanging from the ceiling of the huge bronze chandelier with candlesticks. The walls and vaulted ceiling of an Orthodox Church is decorated with beautiful frescoes, the oldest of which dates back to the year 1637. Most of the frescoes dates back to the end of the 18th century. This is a work of the famous artist Gregory Simi depicting scenes from the life of the virgin, Jesus and the saints.
The Church of the virgin in Lindos is one of the most beautiful churches of the island of Rhodes.
