The only Gothic attractions of the city is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 1360 by architect Peter Stecher. The first Builder was Lviv master Nicholas nitschke, and the first stone in the Foundation of the Shrine was founded by Polish king Casimir the Great.
For centuries, the temple was significantly changed on the outside, has also changed the interior. But the chancel of the Church have survived to this day without change. In 1527, the Cathedral was badly damaged by fire. During the restoration of the Lviv Cathedral in 1760-1780, Peter Poleyovskiy Gothic forms were replaced by Baroque. It was planned that the Church will be two towers, but have only built one on the North side. The fate of the chapels was different: some dismantled, and others, in particular, Kampians, the Boim family, and part of the chapel with the image of Jan Domagala and bas-relief, which depicts a family of Domagala, remained unchanged. The frescoes on the walls and vaults of the temple were painted by Stanislav Stroinski. Sculpture altars were performed by Matthew Poleyovskiy, Francis Olendzki and Jan Bizki. At the end of the nineteenth century enriched with stained glass, designed by Josef Mehoffer and Stanislaus Batovskii.
Written in 1598 Josef Solcom the Wolfowitz icon Merciful Mother of God - "the Beautiful stars of the city" was placed in 1765 above the main altar of the Lviv Cathedral. Before the icon of the Polish king Jan Kazimierz in 1656 made a solemn oath, choosing the mother of God Queen of Poland.
Today the Cathedral has eight chapels, the most famous of which is the chapel Kampians, which is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, and is of particular value. Kampians chapel built in the late XVI century for the family of Lviv patrician Kampians and related families Ostrogorsky. Subtle carved from marble and alabaster adorns the interior of the chapel. The altar of black marble with sculptures of St. Peter and Paul created the Dutch master. Cutter Johann Pfister belongs with the side walls with inscriptions dedicated to Pavel Kampians and his son Martin, with portraits of Church fathers and evangelists.
