The old theatre in Lublin was built in 1822 by the architect Luka Rodkiewicz in classical style on the site of the destroyed building of the 16th century. The first performance took place on 20 October 1822. In 1845 the building was sold at auction to the Polish nobleman Paul Bernacki.

Despite its modest size: small auditorium, balcony, and the stage, illuminated by oil lamps, the theatre enjoyed the love of the public. In the late 19th century in Lublin was the construction of a new theatre, where he gave performances of touring companies and performers.

The old theatre was closed in 1981. Later, in the building several times flashed fire that destroyed the props and interiors. In 1994, a regional Foundation purchased the theatre for 100 gold, promising to repair it within two years. The promise Fund is not kept, and the building was in ruins. In January 2005 the Prosecutor's office accused the President of Fund of causing wilful damage to the building of the theater, after which it was transferred to the city. The world monuments Fund (WMF) included the Old theatre in a list of 100 buildings that are under threat of extinction. Renovations began in 2007, the cost of reconstruction was estimated at 26 million PLN 20 million of which Lublin received from the EU.

Grand opening of the restored theatre was held on 11 March 2012 concert "Luz de guía" performed by guitarist Jose Fernandez. The opening was attended by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife, as well as many other important political persons and artists.

During reconstruction, the theatre has two additional floors, now the theater can accommodate 165 guests.

Currently the Old theatre is the site of various cultural events. In addition to sophisticated theatre program offers concerts, thematic meetings and educational activities for children.
