Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral Photo: the Cathedral of the Transfiguration

Transfiguration Cathedral — Orthodox Church, located in Lublin. The Cathedral was built in 1607-1633, on the site of a former Orthodox Church.

Date in the city of the first Orthodox temple for sure could not be determined, but we know that in 1586 was founded Orthodox community of the Transfiguration, and then began construction of the first temple. Unfortunately, almost immediately after the inauguration, the temple was completely destroyed by fire. In 1607, the Orthodox brotherhood took the decision to build a new stone Church. Construction work was delayed for 26 long years, caused by frequent religious conflicts in Lublin. In 1633, was elected king władysław IV Vasa, which confirmed the right of the Orthodox community in the possession of the Church in Lublin. The king helped the community, confirmed a number of important benefits, including excluded the Church from the jurisdiction of the Uniates. In the same year, on 15 March, the Metropolitan Petro Mohyla consecrated the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. Despite the statement of władysław IV, in 1635, the Church was again seized by the Uniates.

After the suppression of the January uprising by the Russian authorities began a gradual elimination of Uniatism and the Church in Lublin, they have removed all of Latin religious elements. After may, 1875, when the Uniates in Lublin were eliminated, Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral was returned to the Orthodox parish, which at that time the city had 80 people.

During the First world war from the Church were taken to Moscow all valuable icons that never came back to Lublin. After the restoration of Polish independence, the Cathedral wanted to close, but later this idea was abandoned. During the Second world war, the Cathedral continued its work.

In February 1960, the Cathedral of the Transfiguration was entered in the register of monuments in Poland.
