Park Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli" was created in the Italian region Tuscany, in 1979. It was one of the first regional parks of Italy and the second, created in Tuscany (after the Park of the Maremma, founded in 1975). The Park stretches along the coast of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca, “absorbing” in the municipalities of Pisa, Viareggio, San Giuliano Terme, Vecchiano and Massarosa. In the past the land was covered with swamps, which eventually filled with sediments deposited by the rivers Serchio and Arno.

A variety of different ecosystems and climates in different parts of the Park ensured the existence on its territory of a huge number of species of animals and plants is a real encyclopedia of natural outdoor. Of Park ecosystems is especially remarkable sand dunes, which stretches for 23 km along the coast between the towns Calambrone and Viareggio, wetlands, covering an area of about 3 thousand hectares of cultivated land and forests, covering a third of the Park.

A major attraction of the Park is the lake of Massaciuccoli, located in the same area and having no more than 2 meters in depth. On the lakeshores of Torre del Lago and Massaciuccoli, in the last one for a long time lived the famous composer Giacomo Puccini. Today, his Villa was converted into a Museum. In this town one can visit the remains of a Roman Villa Terme Buka di Nero.

In the middle of the Park in an area of nearly 5 thousand hectares spread over San Rossore countryside, remarkable for the diversity of species of flora and fauna and its landscapes. On the coast you can see Oystercatcher, Curlew, Rakasha and various species of ducks and gannets. Away from the coast roam fallow deer and wild boars are typical inhabitants of these places. At the local marshes in the migration season, thousands of birds, to observe that there is a smaller number of nature lovers.

Attraction of the Park is the visitor centre, occupying the Villa Borbon in Viareggio. The Villa was built in the early 19th century to Maria Luisa of Bourbon, and in 1985 was transferred to the municipality. Another visitor centre of the Park is situated in the Villa medicea di Portoferraio in Coltano.
