Another major and perhaps the most famous landmark of Madrid - Puerta del Sol, the Central square of the city. This area was formed in place of the former gate in the wall surrounding the city in the middle ages. The name of the square was through these gates: Puerta del Sol means Sun Gate. In 1521 Gates of the Sun were demolished to widen the entrance to the city, the space around them increased, and thus this place was formed the area.

Today, the Puerta del Sol has the form of a month and is the intersection of immediately eight roads. In the center of the square in the ground mounted plate of bronze, which is considered the zero point road distances in Spain, because the Puerta del Sol is the centre of Madrid, and Madrid, in turn, the center of the country.

In the center of the square is a monument to Charles III, who is depicted sitting in the saddle, and on the corner of the street Carmen are made of a bronze sculpture of a she-bear and a strawberry tree, a symbol of the Spanish capital. It is these characters and depicted on the coat of arms of Madrid.

Here is also located the post office, date of construction of which dates back to 1761. The top of the tower of this building adorned with a clock that traditionally new year's eve discourage strikes, symbolizing the coming of the New year. Now this building is the seat of government of the Madrid Autonomous region.

In 1919 it was under the Puerta del Sol was built the first urban metro line.
