Góra Kalwaria is a Polish city located in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship on the Vistula river, 25 km South-East of Warsaw. The city was originally called simply Gura (literally, "Mountain"), but in the eighteenth century was renamed in góra Kalwaria ("Mount Calvary"). Currently góra Kalwaria is a modern industrial city, where the production of food and sports equipment. Góra Kalwaria – the birth place of a lot of years.
The existence of the village Gura is known from the early thirteenth century. The settlement was completely destroyed during the Swedish occupation, known as the deluge, which occurred in 1666. At the end of the seventeenth century the village became the property of the Bishop of Poznan Stephen Wierzbowski, who decided to found a new city on the ruins of settlements. His idea was to build the so-called religious centre, providing a range of services to citizens. The Bishop was very encouraged to hear that the local landscapes reminded him of the Holy Land. Construction work began in 1670, the urban development plan was based on a medieval map of Jerusalem. The Bishop was invited to the city of the Dominican and Bernardine, and soon the town was built monasteries, churches and cathedrals. After the death of the Bishop in the city began a period of decline: were demolished churches and chapels, and in 1883 góra Kalwaria was deprived urban rights. In the early nineteenth century lifted the ban on Jewish settlement in the city, after which góra Kalwaria has become one of the main centers of Hasidic Judaism.
Here you can see the system of city building, in the shape of a Latin cross and plans of medieval Jerusalem. It is believed that the construction was attended by renowned designer Tilman van Gameren. In the city center has preserved the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the mid seventeenth century by Jakub Fontana. Also in the center of góra Kalwaria survived several synagogues.
