Cathedral St. Paul's Cathedral is the largest Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia. Built in the Gothic style, the Cathedral is the patronal Church of the Archbishop of Melbourne and head of the Anglican Archdiocese in the state of Victoria.
The location of St. Paul's Cathedral very well: instead there is a complex of architectural monuments of Federation square, and diagonal is the largest railway station Flinders street station. Together, these buildings form a kind of historical center of Melbourne.
Because in the 19th century the population of Melbourne consisted mainly of parishioners of the Anglican Church, she was given the best place in the city for the construction of the main Cathedral. And this place was not chosen by accident – there was held the first services since the founding of the city in 1835. Previously this was the site of the Cathedral of St. James.
The first Foundation stone of the new Cathedral was laid in 1880. The chief architect was appointed the Englishman William Butterfield, which, however, the construction never visited, which led to numerous disputes between the ecclesiastical authorities in Melbourne and living in London architect. Because of constant disagreements the construction of the Cathedral was delayed and, in the end, was completed by local architect Joseph reed in 1891. However, the tower and spire was finally erected only after 35 years! Today, the spire is the second tallest in the world among Anglican churches.
When St. Paul's Cathedral was completed, it became the tallest building in the city – it's visible from almost any point. But already in the first half of the 20th century many new buildings, growing by leaps and bounds, exceeded the Cathedral in height and blocked the view of it.
In the Cathedral is set imported from England body – the creation of the famous masters T. S. Lewis. This body, consisting of 6, 5 thousand tubes, is one of the largest in the world, made in the 19th century. In the 1990s, it was restored, he spent $726000.
Interestingly, for the construction of the Cathedral used the Sandstone which was brought from New South Wales, not the local limestone, which was built most built in those years buildings. Sandstone gives the Cathedral a warm yellow-brown. But the tower was built from another stone, so the color is slightly different.
