The Gold Museum is housed in the old Treasury building in Melbourne, built in the years 1858-1862. Once this building was the second most important in the city after the building of the Parliament, but the Treasury was located in it long – until 1878.
The architect of the building was a young but very talented John Clark, who started the construction, when he was barely 19 years old. Today in the neo-Renaissance style is one of the most beautiful in the city. By the way, later Clark designed the Treasury building in Brisbane, Queensland.
Only in 1994 the Gold Museum was opened to the public. Today, the Museum holds permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history of the gold rush in Australia, but also the establishment and development of Melbourne. The Museum is even sometimes called city. For example, the exhibition "Making Melbourne" you can learn about the history of the city since its Foundation in 1835 as a small settlement of colonists and ending our day. Naturally, an important part of the exhibition tells of the dashing days of gold mining, which triggered the rapid growth of Melbourne and turned it into a major city of the continent. Another exhibition is "Built on gold" - allows you to look at those years when Victoria was first found gold bullion and learn how this discovery changed the fate of Australia. The Museum also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, inviting visitors to feel the great past of the Melbourne.
