Popular history Museum in the town of Polar is a non – profit municipal institution. The Museum was opened on 24 June 1999 on the day of the celebration of the centennial anniversary Polar Murmansk region. Famous historical Museum preserves the cultural heritage, closely linked to the historical development of the Northern fleet.

In October 1997, the company signed a decree on the establishment of the new Museum, after almost two years, the Museum staff had prepared for the Grand opening of the first exhibition. For the opening of the Museum, the city authorities have identified the three-storey building, built in the mid 1930-ies. On the ground floor there is a room designed to open Children's Museum, artists ' studios, a lecture hall, storage facility and some utility rooms. The second floor was equipped for the exhibition space, which was consolidated in several exhibition halls. In this room is the main exposition of the Museum devoted to the history of the Navy and the entire city. On the third floor there are two rooms reserved for the needs of temporary exhibitions. Also on the third floor has a library, administrative offices and offices for Museum staff.

The main exposition is located on the first floor and has three rooms with an area of 400 sq. m. All exhibits have a distribution according to several themes. In the Museum you can visit the Department, which is dedicated to the flora and fauna, Department, tells the story of the construction of the Northern fleet, integrationby section, the division dedicated to the great Patriotic war, as well as the Department of contemporary history.

The Museum staff removed friendly and cooperative relations with various Museum institutions, on the third floor are two rooms dedicated to temporary expositions, but still never empty. In this room, organized the exhibition not only from your own funds and vaults, but also exhibitions brought from other cities. It often happens that the Museum hosts several exhibitions. In the premises of the temporary exhibitions are often displayed the works of painters, photographers, craftsmen, presents embroidery, embroidery, flower arranging, quilting. In the historical Museum are held and professional exhibition related to the holidays of all kinds of occupations. For example, visitors can get acquainted with the products of the local bakery and the displays of the different technical tools used in the work of the police and firemen. In spaces designated for the temporary exhibitions are regularly organized presentations of international projects, conducted in cooperation with Norway and Russia.

Today, the Museum collections of historical Museum Polar are composed of about 12 thousand of different items, because not long ago, the Museum staff began to collect priceless Museum collection.

In 2001 came to the city archaeologists from the St. Petersburg Institute of material culture. In the course of excavations of the burial mounds were discovered unique items that are directly associated with the ritual burials of the North-Western primitive European tribes. The Museum staff to a greater extent try to reflect in all exhibitions of the most critical stages of the formation of the city of Polar and Kola Peninsula. All Museum collections are constantly replenished, giving the opportunity for periodic review, as well as conversion of exhibitions. In 2002, in one of the Museum's departments was opened an exhibition hall, which was dedicated to the flora and fauna of the Kola Peninsula.

In 2000, the Museum has established a Department which has received the name of the Museum under the open sky, where it is fashionable to see naval and military equipment up to date.
