The granitoids of the island of Mickow Photo: the Granitoids of the island of Mickow

Granitoids of the island of Mickow called state geological natural monument of regional significance located in the area of Kandalaksha district, Murmansk region, in Codosera forestry. The monument carries both scientific and educational importance, being one of the most interesting and unexplored objects on the territory of the Russian North.

The granitoids are located in the North-Eastern side of the island of Mickow, namely in the Kandalaksha Bay of the White sea, at the entrance to Koudou lip, in 6 km to the East of a small village called Kovda and 7-mi km South-East from the village Lesozavodsk and 55 km South of Kandalaksha. The total area that is occupied by the granitoids of approximately 10 hectares.

Island Mickow is a desert island. To the North-West, the South and West of the island is a large variety in the form of Islands, the largest number of which do not have names because of very small size. Among the largest Islands include: Berezovets, Lovec, Tall, Curve, Distanoe, Backlash and Martinu. Closer to the southwest side of Mickow longest stretches a sandbar that connects an island and surrounding small Islands.

With regard to the relief component of the island, it has an uneven surface, somewhat elongated in the direction from North-West to South-East and slightly expanding to the Eastern part with several bays, which stretch out from the North and South, dividing the island into two halves and leaving a small isthmus widths up to several tens of meters. The total length of the island is about 1, 5 km and a width of 850 m at its widest part.

The impressive part of the island is covered with thick impenetrable forest, excluding only the North-Western end of the isthmus in the middle part. There are also three small hill sloping, the height of which reaches up to 9 m in the North-Western side. In the North-Western part of the island, on one of the hills, a small geodesic point.

Unique state complex is a natural complex outcrops of granitoids on a total area of approximate size 200 to 500 meters, with the age of the granites, which occur at the location of its formation is equal to about 2, 4-2, 5 billion years. Education natural granites occurred gradually over an extended period of time at a temperature of about 600 °C and a pressure of about 6 thousand bar. This process occurred as a result of a complete remelting located in this area even more ancient rocks, which are called amphibolites and gneisses, and their remnants in the form of a kind of xenoliths scattered throughout finding granites in the form of huge boulders and heavy debris. It should be noted that considerable interest natural monument is for researchers, geologists and adventurers who are interested in the granite formation process of deep.

Today, there are accurate data on average monthly temperatures that prevail in the area of location of the monument, which is 12, 5 °C, which is characteristic of the warm season, and cold season temperature reaches -12, 4 °C. In the course of the years rainfall is 398 mm.

The granitoids of the island of Mickow received the status of a national monument on 24 December 1980, according to the decision No. 537 of the Murmansk regional Council of people's deputies. Responsible for the protection and control of the monument were appointed the Committee of Ecology and nature management of the Murmansk region, as well as State management of specially protected natural territories and objects of the Murmansk region. It is worth noting that today, the protection mode of granitoids of the island is missing.
