Caravanserai Buyuk Khan Photo: caravanserai Buyuk Khan

Caravanserai Buyuk Khan located in the North of Nicosia, along with the Selimiye mosque is one of the most important attractions of the Turkish part of Cyprus. Buyuk Khan was erected in 1572 and is a whole complex of buildings, which housed an Inn. However, the degree of protection he had not yielded a small fortress.

Caravanserai is a complex of four two-storey interconnected buildings arranged in the shape of a square, whose total length is about 50 meters. Almost in the center of the closed from all sides of the courtyard stands a small octagonal mosque, a swimming pool, designed for the washing of the feet. The buildings themselves are built of yellow stone, decorated with many arches, turrets and towers. Around the inner perimeter of the buildings are wide verandas.

Later, beginning in 1878, after the capture of the territory by the British, the Inn was turned into a prison. However, at the end of the Second world war Buyuk Khan became a shelter for the homeless. Soon, however, the local authorities conducted a reconstruction of the complex and gave the building to the disposal of the Museum of art. Now in Buyuk Khan are several cozy cafes and souvenir shops where you can buy wonderful handmade items – figurines, jewelry, soap, dishes, and delicious Turkish delights.

In addition, even more popular among tourists, this place has become the famous Turkish shadow theater, whose performances in Cyprus can only be seen in Buyuk Khan.
