The Cathedral of the ascension in Novosibirsk is one of the most iconic attractions of the city. Earlier the temple was called "Turukhansk", as it was situated on the homonymous street. However, after some time, the street was renamed.
In 1913, in the town of Novonikolaevsk was built the first wooden Church of the ascension. The Church was wooden, iron roof, in conjunction with a bell tower. Ceremony of consecration of the Church took place in April of 1913 and In 1924 was founded Novonikolaevsk diocese, and then in the temple had positioned the chair of the Bishop. A year later they erected a chapel in honor of St. Nicholas.
In 1937, the ascension, the Church was closed and used as a granary. In 1944 the Church was returned to believers, and three years later it received the status of Cathedral. Then, thanks to the efforts of Metropolitan Archbishop Bartholomew began work on the reconstruction and expansion of the temple. In the spring of 1946, the bell tower of the Church was decorated with bells, and a year later was built the second temple altar in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov. Later was built the stone baptismal room with the Church of the Epiphany. In 1979 was arranged in the lower Church, which was consecrated in honor of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky and of Gideon Forefather.
In 1974 began the overhaul of the Cathedral, rebuilt the Western part, internal columns and walls were replaced with stone. Later the interiors were decorated with mosaics and paintings. Built an administrative building, a chapel and landscaped area. Completion of the reconstruction of the Cathedral of the ascension was timed to the 1000 anniversary of the baptism of Rus. The reconstruction finally ended in August 1988, as a result, the Cathedral became the real decoration of the city.
