Mitla is an ancient city in the East of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. True name of the city is Nahuatl underworld mictlan, which translates as "place of the dead".

Mitla is a town in the Indian state of Zapotec people. In its heyday, and it's 7-8 century ad, the town was inhabited by about 10 thousand people. It is a place of ancient settlement of the Aztecs Joó-PAA, the existence of which is reflected in the four Palace and two temple pyramids.

When the Spanish came to Mexico, they came and Christianity. Sacred places of the city were destroyed and their ruins was built the Church of San Pablo. Its red dome and to this day, triumphant tower over the other buildings. In many buildings Mitla is possible to find characteristic geometric mosaic patterns covering almost all the walls. This ornament is found only here. One of the most interesting buildings is the Palace of the Supreme ruler is a complex architectural structure, something similar to a maze, it hold a four-meter columns carved from solid rock.

Today the city is an archeological zone. Many tourists say that the city fascinates with its mysticism that being here, one experiences a sort of trance.

On the ancient place of refuge Mexican ancestors found many household items: ceramics, funerary urns and jewelry made of precious metals and stones. Excavations on the site of Mitla not cease in our time.
