Ilori Church is one of the ancient temples of Abkhazia. It is located East of the town of Ochamchira, in the small village Ilor. The patron of the temple is considered to be St. George.

According to historical records, the Church was erected in the XI century There is a legend telling about the causes that gave rise to the construction of the Ilori Church. According to legend, a local Prince while hunting in the forest wounded deer. A wounded animal, running away from the Prince, hidden among the thickets. The Prince continued to pursue his prey. Traces of the fleeing animal brought hunter to the ruins of an ancient sanctuary. Here he saw something unusual, namely the wounded deer to put his head on the throne with a high cross in the altar. After seeing the Prince realized that the animal under the patronage of St. George. He left the deer alive and ordered to build a Church in honor of this Saint.

Ilori Church is very beautiful, simple, one-hall of the temple, the altar in which is a small semi-circle. The Church building is covered by a stone arched ceiling, supported by speakers from the walls of the large pilasters. The temple has three entrances – North, West and South. At different times to them were added the aisles. Light into the chapel with five small Windows.

The decoration of the temple was once very luxurious. Glory about silver and gold liturgical chalices and vessels that resided within its walls, spread across the country. Today in the Ilori Church keeps only a small portion of the treasure.

During the Turkish occupation, the Church, like many other temples of Abkhazia, was badly damaged by fire. About the middle of the XIX century the Church was renovated and covered with iron. Exterior and interior walls of the monastery plastered retained all the inscriptions on the alphabet asomtavruli, as well as reliefs the front of the Church.

Currently Ilori Church is a functioning Church and one of the main iconic attractions of the city of Ochamchira.
