Bridge Royal is one of the three oldest Parisian bridges (the first two – Pont-Neuf and Marie). It leads to the pavilion of Flora and garden of the Tuileries on the right Bank of the Tank from the street on the left. Street name recalls that once, in the sixteenth century, from this place depart ferry carrying stone blocks for the construction of the Palace of the Tuileries (bac French and means "ferry").
The ferry went eighty-two years, but in 1632 came the bridge – financier Barbier ordered it, and the local entrepreneur Pedo built. The wooden bridge was red, so it was called Pont-Rouge, although officially it was called Pont-Saint-Anne (in deference to Anne of Austria).
With the bridge all the time something was happening. At first it was repaired, then completely rebuilt, after which it burned and sank, he was again reconstructed, propped up, and, finally, eight of fifteen arches carried away by a flood in 1684. Madame de sevigny in his famous letters emphasized the latter case, after which it was decided to build a stone bridge.
Construction is fully funded Louis XIV, he gave quite logical bridge connecting the left Bank with the Palace of the Tuileries, the new name – Royal, that is Royal. The bridge has quietly existed for a century, the townspeople loved to host street parties.
During the French revolution, the name quickly changed the bridge became a National that is also quite logical. Here 13 vendemiaire (October 5) 1795 Napoleon put a gun to defend against armed Cavaliers of the national Convention and the Committee of public safety, located in the Palace of the Tuileries. It was a turning point in the life of Napoleon. The commander of the convent Barras encouraged the young General to lead the operation to suppress the rebellion, and after some hesitation he agreed. Napoleon ordered to deliver forty guns and took them to the outskirts of the convent. Against artillery fire, the rebels have not been able to do though and tried to break with the left Bank by the National bridge and grab the gun, standing right next to him. So were provided with the safety Convention and career of Napoleon, decided the future of Europe.
Later Napoleon gave the bridge another name – the Tuileries, and in 1814 Louis XVIII returned his Royal name. Now this five-arch stone paved bridge simple and austere appearance is among the historical monuments of Paris.
