The Cathedral of St. Andrew in the Greek city of Patras is the largest Church of Greece and the third largest in the Balkans (after the Cathedral of Saint Sava in Belgrade and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia). St. Andrew is the patron Saint of Patras. It is here that the Apostle spent the last years of his life and was martyred. The Cathedral was built on the site of the alleged crucifixion of the Apostle Andrew.
The construction of the Cathedral began in 1908 under the project and under the direct supervision of the famous Greek architect Anastasios Metaxas. Since 1937, after the death of Metaxas, the work was led by Georgios Nomikos. The construction of the Cathedral lasted 66 years and in 1974, finally held its Grand opening.
A Grand structure built in the Byzantine style and impresses with its grandeur. The main dome of the temple is crowned with a five-meter gilded cross. On the perimeter he is surrounded by twelve small domes with crosses, which symbolize Jesus and the twelve apostles. Impressive and the interior of the temple. Here you will see the stunning beauty of the frescoes, magnificent mosaics and huge carved chandelier from a tree. In the side chapel to the right of the altar on the marble throne in the silver ark contains the main relic of the Cathedral – power and part of the precious head of the Apostle Andrew. Here at the altar is a reliquary, made in the form of a St. Andrew cross, with particles of an ancient cross, which was actually crucified the Apostle Andrew. The Cathedral occupies an area of about 2000 sqm and has a capacity of about 5,500 people.
Is located near the Cathedral and the old Church of St. Andrew, built in the first half of the 19th century on the foundations of an early Christian Basilica of St. Andrew by the famous architect Lysandros Kaptanoglu.
Today the Cathedral of St. Andrew is one of the most revered shrines of the Christian world, which is annually visited by huge number of pilgrims from all over the world.
