Geraki Photo: Geraki

Geraki is a small town in the southern part of the Peloponnese, approximately 40 kilometres East of Sparta. The town is located at the foot of mount Parnon in the place of the ancient settlement Gerontes. History, culture, traditions and architecture of this old town is of much interest. Geraki is also an ideal starting point for exploring Mani and visit the famous medieval fortress town of Monemvasia.

During the archaeological excavations it was revealed that the first settlement on the site of Geraki existed in the Neolithic period. In ranellucci period there was probably located some administrative centre, as evidenced by the number of found architectural fragments, similar to those that were found by archaeologists during excavations Lenny.

In the middle ages Geraki flourished and was an important link between Mystra and Monemvasia. At the beginning of the 13th century, when the Peloponnesus was conquered by the crusaders, there was founded one of the twelve baronies of the Achaean Principality, Barony Geraki. Baron guy de Nivelet that controls the region, built on rising above the hill settlement of a massive fortification, ruins of which today are a major local attractions. In the second half of the 13th century the land was again under the control of the Byzantines, thoroughly strengthened the castle and built a number of beautiful temples.

Has been preserved in the castle and several Byzantine churches with unique wall paintings of the Church of St. George, the Church of the virgin Zoodochos Pigi, the Church of Agia Paraskevi, Church of Elijah the Prophet, etc. a Lot of fun you will get walking and the streets of the Geraki.
