Lucishe gorge Photo: Lucishe gorge

Among the many attractions of the Peloponnese separate attention deserves the picturesque Lucishe gorge. It is located high in the mountains in the Western part of Arcadia, and this is perhaps one of the most beautiful areas of the Peloponnese. The length Luzickoho gorge is about 15 km and a maximum width of about 2 km. Along the bottom of the gorge flows the turbulent mountain river Lucius, from which, in fact, the gorge got its name.

Lucishe gorge is considered one of the most interesting and picturesque sights of the Peloponnese. In addition to the incredible beauty of breathtaking landscapes, here you will find a lot of interesting places, ancient churches and monasteries, ruins of ancient Greek city of Gortys, known for its temple of Asclepius, and small traditional villages, nestled on the picturesque slopes covered with dense forests of the rocky mountains surrounding the gorge, and much more.

Of special interest are certainly ancient temples – "old" and "new" monastery of the Philosopher (the 10th and 17th centuries, respectively), built directly into the rock monastery of St. John the Baptist (12th century), the monastery Amulon and the Church of Agios Andreas. Definitely worth a visit and the picturesque village of Dimitsana, located in the Northern part of the gorge on the mountain slopes, at an altitude of about 950 m above sea level. Near dimitsana village is fascinating and the hydroelectric power Museum under the open sky. Individual attention and such picturesque villages as Stemnitsa and Caritina with lots of interesting sights.

Those wishing to take a fascinating walking tour the depths Luzickoho gorge is worth considering that during the rainy season these places are quite dangerous and these walks are really not recommended.
