The Fortress Of Chlemoutsi Photo: The Fortress Of Chlemoutsi

Chlemoutsi – a medieval fortress in the Peloponnese in the Prefecture of Ilia (Alice), West Greece. It is located 12 km West of Andravida and 6 km South of the port town of Kyllini.

The fortress of Chlemoutsi was built in 1220-1223, Achaean ruler of the Principality (known more as the Principality of Morea) Geoffrey I Villehardouin. The fortress was one of the main strongholds of the crusaders in the region, but primarily was built for extra protection of the medieval port of Glarentza, the ruins of which, in fact, was built a modern port of Kyllini.

Given that Chlemoutsi was built just a few kilometers from the coast on top of a hill at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, which provided an excellent overview of how marine horizons, and much of the land of Elis and Achaia, the fortress was strategically selected. Not surprisingly, the fortress over the centuries was of particular interest to the invaders. Alternately it was ruled by the Franks, Catalans, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks. The last was directed here until 1821 and made a number of changes to the architecture of the fortress. In 1825 troops of the Egyptian Ibrahim Pasha partially destroyed Chlemoutsi and later the fortress was no longer used.

Today the fortress of Chlemoutsi is an important historical and architectural monument and is perhaps one of the best and most well-preserved samples fortifications of the initial period of frangokratia in Greece. Every year in the summer, the castle hosts concerts and various shows.

From the top of the fortress offers stunning panoramic views of the vast expanses of the Ionian sea and the picturesque island of Zakynthos. On the slopes of the hill is a small village of Castro.
