The Samson fountain is the largest and most powerful fountain of the Grand cascade. A stream of water from his jet reaches a height of nearly 21 meters.
Fountain "Samson" appeared in Peterhof in 1735 in honour of the 25th anniversary of the victory in the battle of Poltava Russian army over Swedish. The choice of subject for the composition of the monument was not accidental. During the Northern war, the image of a lion on the Swedish coat of arms was a symbol of the enemy, and the battle of Poltava happened on June 27, 1709 in Saint Samson's day. For this reason, the biblical Samson, triumphing need a lion, could more fully and artistically to characterize a victory of Russia over Sweden.
Originally the sculpture was made of lead. The model developed by B. Rastrelli. The idea of the pedestal, according to some sources, belonged to the architect M. Zemtsov.
In 1802, a lead sculpture, fairly swollen, replaced by bronze. It was cast by the model M. Kozlovsky. Architect A. Voronikhin created a new pedestal with semicircular niches. They were placed gilded lion's head, made by the sculptor M. Tanninim.
During the great Patriotic war, the Germans stole the statue of Samson. There is a theory that bronze was used for military purposes.
To restore the legendary fountain was a matter of honour. In 1947, sculptor V. Simonov, together with assistant N. Mikhailov has carefully studied the pre-war photos of the fountain and created the model on which the sculpture was cast in bronze at the Leningrad plant "Monumentality". In September 1947 the fountain "Samson tearing the lion's mouth" was opened after restoration works. In 1956 by the preserved sample were recreated 8 bronze Dolphin fountains.
At the end of December 2010, the statue was dismantled and sent for restoration, and in April 2011 he returned to his seat.
There is a legend that Samson was not built in 1735, and 10 years earlier – back in 1725, Catherine I, which, though, and wished scarcely ascended the throne, to commemorate the Russian victory in the battle of Poltava allegorical image of Samson killing the lion. Other legends tell that, allegedly, the fountain was built under Peter the Great, who dedicated "Samson" great victory of the Russian fleet at Gangut.
