Towering white peaks Wat Mahathat can be seen for several kilometers. It is the Central temple of the city of Phetchaburi is located in the heart of it.

The full name of the temple sounds like Wat Mahathat Worawiharn or, otherwise, Phra Prang To Iodine, which translated means “the five sacred prangos”.
Pranami called stupas in the form of corncobs, characteristic of Khmer civilization and the early period of the history of Thailand that copied their neighbors.

The basis of Wat Mahathat is white 55-meter prange, 4 of them are around one main. At the top of each pranga the statue of the Buddha Kayani, which is a clear sign of Buddhism.

Wat Mahathat was several times reconstructed due to frequent destruction and mistakes during the construction period, to the present time, almost all the details are close copies of the original. The exact age of the temple is still not known, according to some estimates it is about 800-1000 years old. In may 1954, Wat Mahathat was visited by the king Bhumibol Adulyadej, has invested in Central prang ancient relics of the Buddha Gautama.

Besides prangos in the temple is something to see. The walls of the Central room (Vihara) decorated with more than a hundred skillful murals created by artists of the province in the last 200 years. On the territory of Wat Mahathat is also a two-storey Museum, which houses items for Buddhist ceremonies, the collection of ancient ceramics and works of art.
