Municipal art gallery of Rhodes (or art Gallery) is located in the historical part of the homonymous capital of the island. The gallery is located in an old two-story building on Symi square and belongs to the Museum of modern Greek art of the municipality of Rhodes. Magnificent medieval structure was considered an important historical and architectural monument of the city.

Municipal gallery was founded an excellent scholar of modern Greek art and the prefect of the Dodecanese Andreas John in 1950. At a time when even the national gallery in Athens has focused its interests on the painting are not older than the 19th century, Andreas Ioannou has made every effort to collect, preserve and represent the work of a talented young Greek artists. Its doors to visitors of the Municipal art gallery officially opened in 1964.

The gallery presents the work of artists born after 1863. Among the most interesting and valuable paintings should also highlight the work of Greek artists such as Konstantinos Maleas, Konstantinos Parthenis, Spyros Vassiliou, Nikos Hatzikiriakos-HYCOS, Theophilos Hatzimihail, Janis Spiropoulos, Fotis Kontoglou, Nikiforos Lytras, George Bouzianis, Nikos Engonopoulos, Yiannis Morales, Dimitris Mytaras and Yannis Tsarouchis. Collection has high artistic value and perfectly illustrates the development of modern Greek painting.

Today the art Gallery of Rhodes owns one of the best collections of modern Greek painting. In total in the gallery collection gathered about 700 magnificent paintings, but only 90 of them are available to the public in a permanent exhibit. Many of the pictures were presented at official exhibitions, both in Greece and in other countries.
