The first documentary mention of Vigo di Fassa belong to the middle Ages when the town was the chief religious and administrative center of the entire Val di Fassa. But archaeological finds suggests that the first inhabitants of these places appeared in the Paleolithic era. Until 1860, the year, the local economy was based on cattle breeding and agriculture, and by the arrival of the first tourists from Austria, which was attracted by the stunning scenery and temperate climate, Vigo di Fassa began to develop as a resort. After the First World war the city became part of Italy.

Despite the fact that in 1921, the year of Vigo di Fassa is almost completely burnt down during the great fire and was rebuilt, it has retained the unique atmosphere of a cosy Alpine village. In the centre of the town there are lovely Church of Santa Giuliana and San Giovanni. The first is one of the oldest in the Val di Fassa – it has been known since 1237 year and is remarkable for its frescoes in the apse and carved wooden altar. And the Gothic Church of San Giovanni, next to which is a high crowned with a spire steeple, was built in the 14th century. Particularly noteworthy are the Ladin Museum, where you can get acquainted with the legends and tales of ancient history of the Ladin people, and the local Institute of culture, language and heritage of local ethnic groups. You can also visit the Mineralogical Museum of Manzoni with one of the most comprehensive collections of minerals of the Dolomites and the Austrian-Hungarian cemetery.
