Botanical garden of University of Latvia is located in the capital of Latvia. It was founded in 1922, and since then continuously updated. Now, on the territory of 15 hectares of the collection, consisting of 5400 variety of plants. The collections are unique, and features plants from all continents and geographical zones.

Every visitor to the Botanical garden will be able to choose plants for home, garden, pond and other purposes from a wide range of plants. The professionals working here, you will be able to get comprehensive information on gardening and plant protection and caring for them. In addition, by prior arrangement, you can take part in seminars covering the issues of reproduction of plants, their cultivation, information on diseases and pests of plants, and how to apply them in everyday life.

In the greenhouses of the Botanical garden of University of Latvia presents plants of the tropics, subtropics, succulents, and azaleas. Central in the greenhouse complex is the palm house, which presents subtropical plants. The height of the palm house is 24 meters, the exhibition features about 400 plants. Here is happy large collection of palm trees, represented by 48 species, and also one of the oldest plants of the greenhouse – ficus macrophylla growing here since 1928. Here you can also look at the fruit crops of the tropics: banana, Fig, lemon, etc.

In the greenhouse, where the flora of the tropics, always high humidity and air temperature. Here you can see 350 species of plants. Particularly well represented is the family Araliaceae, the collection of tropical ferns, orchids. In the pools you can admire the largest plant of the family nymphaeaceae Victoria, - which will be remembered for its fragrant flowers.

In the greenhouse succulents are about 700 species of plants, 345 of which cacti. Succulents – it is herbaceous or woody plants that have adapted to life in arid conditions. Cacti can be distinguished from other succulent plants by the presence of thorns.

On the territory of the Botanical garden is another greenhouse, which includes azaleas. This is a low evergreen shrubs, obtained by multi-stage crossing. First grade appeared in Europe in the 19th century. The first collection of azaleas was created in the 30 years of the 20th century, but it died during the Second world war. This collection started collecting since 1956. At this point in the collection, there are 124 cultivar.

Herbaceous perennials in the garden appeared in the 20 – 30s of the 20th century, then was created the first rock garden. About the middle of the last century created the exhibition alpinia plants, arranged on a geographical basis. Today the exposition of herbaceous perennials has about 1300 species, with collection available from spring to autumn. Decorative environmental exposure includes 7 gardens rocky garden, flaxby garden, daylily garden, Dahlia garden, rhododendron garden, rose garden, Heather garden. Each of them can distinguish 3 groups of plantings: background, basic and advanced.

The most extensive exposition of the open ground is the arboretum, which occupies an area of 9 hectares. It was founded in the 30-ies, the first seedlings were brought from Berlin nursery. First trees and shrubs were arranged in a systematic manner, i.e. planting families. However, this planting project was only partially met. In 50-ies of the last century laid the TUI collection and cypress trees. Later, the trees and shrubs were grown from cuttings brought from other Botanical gardens.

The latest and only in Latvia is the exposition of wetland plants, established in 2006. On the territory of 120 m2, has created conditions close to the swamp. Cultivated plants typical of bogs in Latvia: Andromeda, cranberries, etc.

Since the founding of the Botanical garden work was carried out to study mosses and lichens. On the territory of Latvia recorded about 500 species of moss, about 40 species identified in the garden, they grow on the ground, the roofs, on the rocks and walls of the greenhouse. In addition, the garden revealed the mushrooms spontaneously settled here. And there are mushrooms as visible to the naked eye, and microscopic.
