Botanical garden of Rostov University has proposed to establish in the beginning of XX century on the initiative of the scientific intelligentsia in connection with the evacuation of Warsaw University in Rostov-on-don in 1915. However, this became possible with the active participation of the Rostov University professors In.N.Warszawskiego and.F.Khmelevsky only 1927, when the city government has allocated land in the North-Western part of Rostov. On this territory before the revolution was located successful flower farm Ramm brothers, natives of Holland. Closer to the river Temernik was located plots for the cultivation of summer crops, and further from the river – greenhouses for winter forcing of flowers for Christmas and Easter. The brothers were engaged in the cultivation of a huge number of seedlings of ornamental and fruit plants, breeding work conducted by hybridization of roses based on the best varieties imported from France and Germany. Produced a fairly large catalogue of ornamental, fruit plants and seeds, only hybrid tea roses brothers offered about 400 varieties.
At the end of 1928 the Botanical garden was transferred to the North Caucasus (Rostov, and today the southern Federal University. For a short period of time was laid Park forest type and arboretum of more than 400 new for the region types. During the great Patriotic war the majority of plantings and buildings were lost. Now from the pre-war plantings have survived and are in good condition 54 species, among which beech, hornbeam, frameworks and South Mississippi, velvet Amur, Chekalkin walnut, oak and large-fruited krupnopernymi, small-leaved elm. Most old plant the English oak for over 120 years.
Currently the Botanical garden is an educational and research division of the southern Federal University, has an area of 160 hectares, classified as natural monuments of regional significance.
