Monumental complex of San Pietro a Corte is perhaps the most important building of the era of the Lombards in Salerno and an important architectural monument of the middle Ages, and is a unique specimen of the Palace complex. Built in the 8th century by order of the Duke of Benevento Areca II, San Pietro a Corte was the most prestigious yard in Lombard Campaign.
As can be seen from the structure, the columns of the upper room are frigidarium baths (warm baths) Spa complex, Dating from the late 1st century BC – early 2nd century A. D. And in the early years of Christianity in this place was located the cemetery where the funeral of the noble inhabitants of Salerno. From there you can get to the great hall, which probably was used for official ceremonies. Attached to it is the Palatine Chapel. In the mid-16th century this hall was rebuilt by Abbot Decio Caracciolo, who added a huge staircase, visible from the entrance Largo Antica Corte. Between the 13th and 16th centuries the chapel was built, dedicated to the blessed virgin Mary.
Over its long history, the complex of San Pietro a Corte was used for different purposes. Once it housed the famous medical school Scuola Medica Salernitana. And soon, after extensive restoration works, here is located the Museum of the Lombards civilization of southern Italy. Today the complex is a member of the project of the municipality of Salerno "Always open monuments" since it is open daily throughout the year.
