The Church of the Dormition of the virgin (Metropolitan Church) was built in Samokov on the wealth of citizens in the later middle Ages, in 1712. It was built in secret from the Turkish authorities and was a small single-nave Church, more like a regular house. In order not to arouse suspicion, was built pipe, which is well visible from the street.
In 1793, Metropolitan was able to reach an agreement with the Turks and to obtain permission for the erection of a Church without a bell tower. Began a substantial renovation, which resulted from the first Church survived only part of the wall asps. The new building was in compliance with the requirements, dug halfway into the ground and surrounded by high walls.
Work on the decoration of the Church were entrusted to the skilful craftsmen. The walnut tree for the iconostasis, pulpit, thrones, etc. were brought from distant mount Athos, and from there arrived also a talented Carver – Andon monk. He decorated wooden products images of animals and birds, plants and other decorations. The icons were painted Samokov painter, the founder of the art school, Hristo Dimitrov. He painted the vaults of the Church.
In 1805 the building was expanded from nave to nave. The work took about a quarter of a century. As a result, in the Church there are three altars: the Central – assumption of the virgin, right (South) – John of Rila, left (North) – Martyr Charalambos. The fourth altar was arranged in the chapel at the Church.
In the same years was significantly expanded iconostasis, which later became one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria. Greek master Athanasius Talador was decorated with intricate carvings two wings of the new iconostasis. Openwork roses, sunflowers and the sun was in addition to an existing song. Painter Dimitar Zograf painted icons on the Royal doors.
In 1892, after his Release, near the Church built a 25-meter bell tower.
Currently the temple is a dome-less stone Basilica with three naves separated by two rows of columns) under a gable roof and a semicircular apse. About two meters she dug into the ground. At the entrance to the building is a porch in the form of a porch supported by columns. The floor of the room is lined with marble and the ceiling is decorated with carvings and painted.
