The Bayrakli Mosque Jamia Photo: Bayrakli Mosque Jamia

The bayrakli mosque Jamia is one of the oldest town houses in Samokov. Located near the Central square of the city, near the bus station. "Bayrak" Turkish will be correctly translated as "flag" and "Bayrakli" is "flag". Archaeologists suggest that the mosque was built from fragments of more ancient mosque of the XVI century. The upper part of the buildings are made of wood, the bulk – rock.

Date of construction Bairacli Jamia – 1840, just before the complete liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke. In connection with this event, used the mosque for its intended purpose very long. However, the mosque is a living reminder of the five centuries of Turkish power. Samokov was captured in 1371, but the city remained a well developed entire occupation period and even became the center of relatedobama industry among all the European provinces, which belonged to the Turks.

The entrance of the mosque is decorated with columns of wood that are inscribed in the facade with frescoes. All this creates the illusion in the theater scene. Such architectural decisions are Prime examples of skill Samokov painters who are easily able to go beyond traditional painting.

Since the national revival of Bulgaria just fell to the XVIII century, is reflected in the construction of the mosque. Typical Bulgarian folk style steel rotunda, crowned by a dome covered with tiles of red. The cornices outside and inside painted ornament with predominant floral motifs. Similar paintings can be seen in Samokov Orthodox churches and even a synagogue in the city. Painting the inside of the mosque is distinguished by a unique combination of traditional styles: European Rococo and Baroque. Perhaps to confuse a mosque and a Christian Church inexperienced pilgrim would be simple if not for the minaret.

Since 1920, the mosque was closed and declared a cultural monument of national level. After restoration the building of the mosque was turned into a Museum.
