The historical Museum, located in Sandanski is one of the main attractions of the city. Museology in Sandanski began with the creation in 1936 of the archaeological community "Struma". A collection gathered by members of the group, was at that time in the First primary school in the city.
In 1960 began the systematic excavation, the purpose of which was the discovery of ancient buildings (houses, churches, etc.) and artifacts on the territory of the ancient city, located near the modern town of Sandanski. The development of archaeology, beneficial impact on the development of the Museum: found new exhibits, an addition to a collection, developed methods of restoration and preservation of cultural heritage.
The Museum complex, which opened in 1960, is located on the spot where once stood the ancient city. Visitors can see here the ruins of various constructions such as the early Christian Basilica of Bishop John and the necropolis, the gymnasium (establishment, which was engaged in physical training), baths and residential buildings. One of the most interesting objects discovered in recent years, is the Episcopal complex, including the Basilica, the baptistery, atrium with a colonnade, premises and facilities, which are currently still being examined.
In addition, the collection of complex – tombstones, coins, pottery, household items, jewelry belonging to different historical periods.
The Museum has a rich archive and comfortable room, which holds archaeological finds, documents, photographs and other materials pertaining to the conduct of archaeological work.
