Samuil's fortress is located on the right Bank of the river Strumento, 16 km West from the town of Petrich. In 997-1014 years when Bulgaria ruled by king Samuel, during the war with Byzantium was built as a defensive system. Part of it, and Samuil's fortress, located in a strategic location may have been used as the point of the commander – Samuel.

In 1014 the Bulgarian army was defeated Byzantine armies of Emperor Basil II, the prisoner was taken about 14 thousand soldiers from Bulgaria. By order of the Emperor, captured soldiers blinded, and in every hundred have left one man with one eye, which was entrusted to take home colleagues. The legend says that king Samuel died from what could not stand the view of thousands maimed so sophisticated way of warriors. And Basil II was nicknamed Bulgaroaice.

Samuil's fortress is a national Park Museum, which includes the eponymous object of archaeology, which has survived 13 small dugouts and the so-called "Big hut", as well as ruins of an observation tower Samuilova fortress. Above them is a panoramic deck with a memorial and a hall for exhibitions.

This Museum is placed in the list of the Hundred national tourist destinations in Bulgaria. Today it is one of the most famous and popular attractions in South-West Bulgaria.
