This monument is the first that was erected in the city of Sevastopol. He immortalised heroism of a brave team of brig "mercury" at the head of their commander - captain-Lieutenant kasarskiy (1799 – 1833).
During the Russian-Turkish war in the Bosphorus, in 1829, in the month of may, the brig "mercury", is equipped with twenty guns, had entered into an unequal battle with two enemy ships: 110 - 74-gun HMS Selenia" and "real Bay". A desperate sea battle lasted more than four hours. As a result of battle the brig was applied about 22 holes, and 297 damage of varying severity, however, thanks to the professional conduct of the battle, the skill and courage of Russian sailors, "mercury" could be the winner of. The victory could not even recognize the enemy, and one of the participants of this battle, the Navigator "real Bey" later wrote: ". During the battle it became clear to us that the captain of the brig in any case will not give up, and if hope is going to have to leave, then he the brig just blow up. If in most of the great deeds of ancient and modern period, there are feats of bravery, the act now overshadows all, and the name of the hero deserves to be carved on the temple of fame gold letters”.
For his gallant feat of the brig "mercury" was awarded the highest prize, namely the right to wear Saint George ensign. Kasarskiy was presented to the rank of captain of the second rank, was awarded the St. George of the fourth degree and enlisted the aide-de-camp to the king's retinue.
The monument kasarskiy was opened in the city of Sevastopol in 1893, he made the project of A. P. Bryullov – known architect. There is a monument in the classical style and is the best of the monumental works of the first half of the nineteenth century. It consists of a truncated pyramid made from the Crimean limestone, on which the ancient trireme iron. In small niches of the podium are the reliefs with the image of A. K. Kazarsky and ancient gods: mercury, Neptune and the goddess Nike, the personification of victory. On the pedestal are the military attributes that symbolize valor, glory, and two macaroons. On the monument there is only one laconic inscription, which was inscribed by order of Nicholas I – sailor's Boulevard. As an example to posterity".
