The Freedom monument dedicated to the heroes of the defense of the SHIPKA pass - one of the key events in the history of Russian-Turkish confrontation of 1877-1878 and the struggle of the Bulgarian people for liberation. In this battle the Bulgarian militia fought shoulder to shoulder with the army of the Russian Empire against the Ottoman invaders. The monument is located on Stoletov peak, named after one of the heroes of that battle – the Russian General Nikolai Grigorievich Stoletov. The Freedom monument was designed by sculptor Alexander Andreyev and architect Atanas Donkova and built on donations of the Bulgarian population.
Every August near the monument residents and guests of the country may be witnessing a historical reconstruction of the events of the defence of SHIPKA. At the same time there is a memorial service for the fallen for the liberation of the country, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Belarusian and Finnish soldiers, and residents and government officials of Bulgaria lay to the base of the memorial wreaths of flowers in gratitude for the freedom and independence of his people.
The monument has the form of a stone tower in the form of a truncated pyramid with a height of over 30 meters. Above the entrance to the tower is a giant lion (height 4 and length 8 meters) and a statue of a woman made of bronze and symbolizing the victory of the Bulgarian people over the invaders and the end of Ottoman rule. On five floors of the memorial is placed the sarcophagus of marble with the remains of several soldiers who died in the defense of, and exposure Bulgarian relics and military flags. Visitors who have risen to the top of the tower, beautiful views of the pass and the surrounding area.
