The Botanical garden of Siena, spread over an area of 2, 5 hectares in the district around via Mattioli in Siena close to Porta Tufi, is a large urban Park, which is open to tourists daily.

The story of the creation of the Botanical garden dates back to 1588, when the University of Siena first began growing medicinal plants – then it was located near the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. In 1756 the field of activity of scientists-botanists have been broadened to include the study of all natural history, and in 1759, under the leadership of Giuseppe Baldassarri in the Botanical garden began to cultivate rare and exotic plants. In 1784, the Great Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo held University reform, which in a short time the collection of the garden has increased many times, including at the expense of income from abroad. In the first published document mentions about 900 plant species, including those brought from different corners of the world. In 1856, the garden moved to its present location, where in the early 20th century was built the Institute's establishment. In the 1960s, the garden area was doubled.

Today the Botanical garden is entirely within the city walls of Siena, occupying a hilly valley area of San Agostino. His main collection is classified according to the classification of plants: each species has its own small plot. On the so-called "Shab" fruit, olives and grapes Chianti. Also in the garden there are three greenhouses with a total area of about 500 square meters, in which you can see tropical plants, a collection of succulents arranged in accordance with the country of origin, insectivorous plants and the main citrus species grown in Europe.
