In the Western part of the Aegean sea lies the small Greek island of Skopelos (part of the archipelago of the Northern Sporades). This is one of the most beautiful and greenest Islands of Greece. The name "Skopelos" is also the administrative center and main port of the island. The city is situated in a picturesque Bay in the form of an amphitheater, walking down the hills to the seashore. On top of a hill overlooking the town, and today you can see ruins of the Venetian castle (Kastro), which was built on the place where in ancient times stood the ancient Acropolis. Here is the Church of Agios Athanasios is the oldest temple on the island, built in the 11th century on the foundations of an ancient sanctuary with magnificent frescos of the 16th century. From the top of the Castro offers stunning panoramic views of the island and the Aegean sea.

The city is famous for a huge number of churches and chapels. Most of them only open on certain holidays. Definitely worth a visit the Church of the virgin, monastery of Zoodochos Pigi and the Church of the Archangel Michael, and in the vicinity of the city - the monasteries of St. Rigina and of Evagelistria. Local attractions include the small Ethnographic Museum.
