Jack monastery St. Ivan Rilski is located on the shore of the Iskar river, one kilometer North-East of the town of Novi Iskar and 12 kilometers from the city of Sofia.
The monastery was founded in the period of the First Bulgarian Kingdom in IX-X centuries and is one of the oldest in the Sofia diocese. In the years of the Ottoman rule it was destroyed. In 1593, the monastery was restored with funds donated by residents of the local villages – komarica, Trebitsch and Dobroslavtsi. At the same time a Church was built, which survived until our days. Paintings in the Church were painted by the famous Bulgarian painter Pimen of Zograf. In the early XX century, the monastery housed a printing center, specializing in the publication of Christian literature.
At present, the Jack monastery complex consists of a Church and residential buildings. From the ancient monastery to the present day remained only the Church is single-nave building with one apse (extension of semi-cylindrical shape in the chancel) and two narthexes. The Church is 15 meters long and 5. 5 meters in width. The building was repeatedly reconstructed, reconstructed. Inside are preserved frescoes Dating back to different historical periods. Of most interest are the surviving fragments of frescos painted on the basis of subjects from Scripture: "the assumption of the virgin", "the last supper", "Beating the slaughter of the innocents", "the washing of the feet, etc. On the East wall is the image of the patron Saint of the Church of St. John of Rila. The mural paintings, dated to the year 1596, probably belong to St. Pimen of Sofia.
In the period of Ottoman rule the sacred monastery was an important spiritual and religious center of Sofia region. Today the monastery contains monuments of Bulgarian culture, the unique samples of handwritten books.
