The Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, the second largest Orthodox temple in the Balkans, many consider one of the architectural symbols of Sofia. This Church was built in honor of Russian Emperor Alexander II, a very distinguished Bulgarians for their help in the attainment of national independence, the country during the war of 1877-1878.when the Russian army helped Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman oppression. The Cathedral bears the name of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky, the great commander, who is the symbol of valor and military glory of Russia. Originally, the temple was planned to build in the country's ancient capital (XII-XIV centuries.), Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, but the Bulgarian Tsar Alexander (Battenbergs) insisted on the construction of the temple in the new centre – Sofia. Funds for the construction of partially allocated from the state Treasury, and were partly donated by patrons and residents of the city (by the way, the king himself has given this 6 thousand gold lions of my own money).

The Church was built by the famous Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev. The area is over 3000 square meters, capacity – about five thousand people. The rich the most attractive exterior facade with white stone and gold-plated dome. The bell tower is 53 meters high, it has 12 bells, the heaviest of which weighs about 12 tons. The interior of the Cathedral impresses sophisticated visitor: many valuable icons and frescoes, executed mainly Bulgarian and Russian artists, massive marble iconostasis, skillfully executed the Patriarch and the Tsar's throne, pulpit. Another pride of the Church is a mosaic that depicts king Ferdinand and Queen Eleanor. Under the Cathedral is the crypt, which houses a large collection of icons, many of which can be called artistic masterpieces.

In the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky are daily, Sunday and holiday services, however, are not conducted baptisms, weddings and funeral (because of his status of a monument, the Church has no clearly defined ward).
