The state Museum of urban sculpture is located in Saint Petersburg. Exists since 1939 and is the only Museum in Russia dedicated to the study, conservation and restoration of monuments in public urban space.

In the Museum is 1500 plaques and over 200 monuments. Among the Museum objects are Narva and Moscow triumphal gates, Rostral columns, Equestrian groups on the Anichkov bridge, the Sphinxes on the pier at the Academy of fine arts, monuments to Peter the great, Nicholas I, Catherine II of Russia, M. V. Lomonosov, Pushkin, A. V. Suvorov, and many others. The main exhibits of the Museum are tombs and necropolises of the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

Annunciation temple-tomb, built in 1717-1724, architects D. Trezzini and T. Schwertfeger, is the oldest stone Church in St. Petersburg, an outstanding architectural monument of the Petrine Baroque. Here lies the body of Alexander Suvorov, are the most valuable artistic and historical gravestones of XVIII-XIX centuries. The exhibition presents a unique collection of works by the talented sculptor of Russian classicism I. P. Martos: tombstones E. I. Gagarina, E. S. Kurakina, N. And. Panin and others. The tomb is rightfully referred to as the I Russian Pantheon: here are buried members of the Royal family, famous statesmen of the eighteenth century.

Lazarevskoe cemetery (now the necropolis of the XVIII century) is one of the first in St. Petersburg. In 1923 it became a Museum under the open sky. There are more than 1000 tombs of the XVIII-beginning of XX centuries, among which there are monuments to the contemporaries of Peter the Great figures of Russian science, history and culture, representatives of the most famous noble families in the history of Russia: D. I. Fonvizin, M. V. Lomonosov, field marshals P. I. Shuvalov, B. P. Sheremetev, admirals N. With. Mordvinov, V. J. Chichagova, the widow of A. S. Pushkin – N. N. Lansky, grandfather of A. S. Pushkin, I. A., Hannibal and many others.

In the Necropolis of Masters of arts (former Tikhvin cemetery) there are about 200 tombstones musicians, writers, artists of the nineteenth century, actors and theatrical figures of the XIX-XX centuries: M. P. Mussorgsky, Glinka, P. Tchaikovsky, I. A. Krylov, N. M. Karamzin, F. M. Dostoevsky, A. A. Ivanov, I. I. Shishkin, P. A. Fedotov, B. M. Kustodiev, A. I. Kuindzhi and others. Artistic gravestones of XVIII-XX centuries are works of the greatest masters of Russian monumental art: M. I. Kozlovsky, I. P. Martos, V. A. Beklemishev, F. G. Gordeev, A. V. Shchusev, A. N. Benoit, M. K. Anikushin.

Part of the Museum of the memorial ensemble is also a memorial necropolis "Mostki" at the Volkov cemetery. Buried here V. G. Belinskii, A. N. Radishchev, N. With. Leskov, I. P. Turgenev, I. P. Pavlov, D. I. Mendeleev and many other prominent figures of the Leningrad science and culture of the twentieth century.

The Museum has an amazing collection of graphics and sculpture. For many years the Museum organizes exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art.

In 2002, the opening of a new Museum exhibition corps in chernoreckom lane, immediately became popular in the city area for an interesting exhibition projects. There are solo exhibitions by local sculptors and artists and thematic exhibitions from the Museum collections.

The Museum is a one of the leading institutions of the city, which is engaged in restoration activities. In the early 70-ies of XX century the Museum was established restoration workshop in stone. For restoration of plaster, metal, graphics, as well as for the most difficult works in marble are involved in the Petersburg high level professionals.

The Museum in recent years has implemented a unique restoration projects of horse groups Anichkov bridge, the Rostral columns, the Alexander column, a monument Field of Mars, Moscow Triumphal gate, the Sphinx near the Academy of Arts.
