Kumamoto castle in 1877 during the Satsuma rebellion was almost completely destroyed – it was only the stone Foundation and one tower. However, in 1960 the castle was completely reconstructed, however, the area has declined and the original and today is 760 thousand square meters. The castle is a national treasure of Japan.

The history of the castle began in the second half of the XV century, when his place between 1469 and 1487 for years was built a small fortress. In the beginning of the seventeenth century, the local daimyo Kato Kamasa ordered to rebuild and strengthen it. A fortified castle at the mouth of the Shirakawa river needed him in order to protect possessions from pirates. The construction of the castle was completed in 1607. During its erection the daimyo used his knowledge of defensive fortifications, received during the war with Korea. The castle was surrounded by a high fortified wall with a length of about 13 kilometers. The castle towered above the earth and looked truly impregnable. For the painted black wall, he was called "crow Castle", also known as the "Castle gingko". On the grounds of the castle were dug 120 wells for drinking water and were planted camphor trees, their wood can be used for furnaces even without pre-drying.

However, all these defensive tweaks did not help the castle to withstand a siege of 1877, which lasted 50 days. After more than a hundred years old Kumamoto castle was restored using modern technologies and materials. The castle was a Museum that displays items samurai battlefield and life: armor, weapons, clothing, harness, musical instruments owned by the owners of the castle.

The 400th anniversary of the castle was marked by a solemn opening of the reconstructed Palace of the daimyo. It was held in 2008. In building the interiors and the features of medieval luxury, which give an insight into the life of the Japanese nobility.
