The Royal Opera house Photo: Royal Opera house

Royal Swedish Opera is the national Opera and ballet scene. The building is located in the heart of Stockholm, in the district of Norrmalm on the East side of the street Gustav Adolf Torg, opposite the Palace of Erfurter (the building of the Ministry of foreign Affairs). It is located on the North side of the river Norstrem and is associated with the Royal Palace bridge Norrbro.

Opera troupe was founded by king Gustav III and its first view of Thetis and Peleus" with Carl Stenborg and Elizabeth Olin, was given on 18 January 1773. It was the first national Opera of Sweden. However, the first Opera house was opened in 1782, he worked for a century and was replaced in the late nineteenth century.

The modern Opera house was designed by architect Carl Fredrik Edelcrantz by order of king Gustav III, a strong supporter of the ideal of enlightened absolutism and the great patron of the arts. The first troupe was housed in the Bollhuset until, as the need arose to separate from Opera drama and give them their own building. The construction of the Royal Opera house began in 1775, and it was opened on 30 September 1782. It also conducted numerous masquerade balls, on the model of the famous Opera ball in Paris.

In the old Opera house was a four-story hall is oval in shape, had great acoustics and line of sight. Luxurious lobby was decorated with neo-classical medallions and pilasters. It is in the foyer of the Opera house, the king met his fatal fate: during the masquerade on March 16, 1792, he was shot and died after 7 days. (In turn, this event inspired Verdi to create the Opera "a masked Ball"). After the murder of the Opera, the theatre was closed until November 1, 1792. However, the son of Gustav III, king Gustav IV Adolf, who loved Opera, perhaps due to the fact that the site of the murder of his father was used as a place of rest, in 1806 decided to close the theater. It remained closed until 1809.

The old Opera house was demolished in 1892, and the construction of a new building by architect Axel Johan Anderberg was completed in seven years. A new Opera house was opened by king Oscar II. First, the new house was named "king's theatre", however, to add the difference between him and created a little later the Royal dramatic theatre, now it's just called "Opera" written in gold letters above the middle arch of the front facade. This majestic neoclassical building with its magnificent Golden foyer and an elegant marble staircase is somewhat less than the old theatre. The Opera house has a capacity of 1200 seats. Most Opera performances today sing in the original language (with Swedish subtitles), and only a few in Swedish.
