Murau is an Austrian city, capital of the homonymous district, located in Upper Styria. This area has existed since the bronze ages, on the territory of modern Murau Romans lived. The first documentary mention of Murau dates back to the year 1250, and 48 years later, in 1298, he received the city status. In 13-15 centuries power in Styria belonged to the family of Liechtenstein, who came from Lower Austria.

During the Second world war in Murau was a camp of the German army, it also contained the British prisoners of war. In early may 1945, a group of resistance fighters have liberated the prisoners. The city was until 1955 in the British zone of occupation.

From a tourist point of view the city is interesting for its medieval streets, beautiful churches and Alpine scenery. Murau is famous for high quality and delicious Breweries, as well as Souvenirs made of wood.

Main sights include the castle Murau with interesting knight's hall and a prison; the Parish Church of St. Matthew, built in the early Gothic style in the year 1296; Anna Church, built in 1400.
